ConclusionConclusionAfter analyzing the 2013 Spills in Weld County, it is clear that (1) spill areas are more concentrated in the southwestern part of the county, and (2) that spills within 500-feet of a waterbody or stream are quite common. While new regulations have stricter guidelines for well locations, the fact that well over a third of the reported incidents were within 500-feet of a waterbody or stream (and thus we considered a higher risk to water quality), it is imperative that we continue to seek regulations that protect waters from the risks associated with oil and gas development. Furthermore, we recommend that industries with wells in close proximity to waterbodies and streams (like grandfathered in to today's regulatory requirements) be considered as priorities for retrofit projects that reduce spill risk. |
